The Smokestack Effect: Toxic Air and America's Schools: USA Today
Winder/Barrow schools were monitored as well as other GA counties.I stumbled upon this while looking for answers as to the chemical smell that has been in air ( very strong smell) for last couple months. Faint smell at my child's school also. Kennedy Elementary and Russell Middle school seem to be worst affected by nearby polluters of one industry that releases lead into the air as a byproduct. ALL parent's should at least take look at this. Carcinogenics, neurological, immune system, developmental, hormone disruptor are a few of the childhood illnesses/diseases that can occur from the chemicals of local Industry. These Industries are releasing in air (fugitive emissions or point source air emissions),surface water discharge and land treatment. Three listing for release are: 1) On-site Disposal to Class 1 Underground Injection Wells, RCRA Subtitle C Landfills, and Other Landfills. 2)Other On-site Disposal or Other Releases 3) Other Off-site Disposal or Other Releases. The five Industries I checked listed as #2 release which is Fugitive/Point Source Air Emissions,Surface Water Discharge and Land Treatment.
