It was officially announced on Wednesday that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton will once again pair up for a movie.
This time Depp will star as The Mad Hatter in Burton's rendition of Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland."
The movie will mix live action with computer animation and this will be Burton's first attempt at directing a 3D film.
This will also mark Burton and Depp's seventh film together.
If you ask me, Depp is a perfect match for the part and I'm actually a bit excited to see Burton's twist on Alice's already dark and magical journey through Wonderland.
I'm not always a huge fan of Burton's films, but there are several that are etched in my mind as classics.
And in my opinion there is always room in Hollywood when Depp is a star in the film.
Here's a list of Burton films that Depp has starred in over the past 20 years:
"Edward Scissorhands" (One of my personal favorites)
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
"Corpse Bride" (Depp plays the voice of Victor in the animated film)
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"
"Sleepy Hollow"
and
"Ed Wood"
I never saw "Ed Wood" so I can't comment on that one, but "Edward Scissorhands" has, and always will have, a special place in my heart.
I was skeptical about "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." I felt like it was one of those films that can't be redone, or at least redone well.
I was oddly pleased with Burton's rendition of the film. I think the fact that he took it so far out there, so different from the first that it actually worked for me.
I really liked "Corpse Bride." I think Burton has a niche for animation.
I don't remember "Sleepy Hollow" very well, but I did end up liking "Sweeney Todd."
Despite what the critics say, the movie was very well done and the characters' darkness was borderline comical, similar to the feeling I get when I watch Tarantino's "Kill Bill" movies, so violent and bloody that it seems surreal, almost cartoonish.
And although Depp didn't star in "Beetle Juice," it's still one of my favorite Burton flicks.
And now, "Alice in Wonderland."
I think it's a wise choice for Burton and Depp does seem to have that Mad Hatter vibe to him. Maybe Burton and Depp aren't such an odd couple after all.
And now I'm thinking I would like to see Burton and Tarantino pair up for a film. That would make for an interesting take.
I'm anxious to see where this one will go.
The film is scheduled to open in 2010.
