I would like to hear from other parents in regards to the fitness assessments that will be (are being given now) given to our children in public schools. I blogged about the GA.SHAPE Partnership- Ga Student Health and Physical Education- HB 229 about a year ago.
If you didn't get the memo from your child's school you can go to:
www.fitnessgram.net
or you can go to:
www.humankinetics.com/in-the-news/states-turn-to-assessment-tool-to-help-combat-childhood-obesity
Excerpt from Human Kinetics:" In addition to giving states and districts access to the fitness data, which can be COMPARED TO ACADEMIA, ATTENDANCE, and OTHER DATA."
Do I need to spell out the correlations of this one sentence?
I don't know how other parent's feel about this, but I do not want an EDUCATIONAL entity conducting HEALTH appraisals of my children. I believe health appraisals should be left to persons (medical doctors) with medical degrees. Is our state setting itself up for medical malpractice, negligence of health, failure to treat, failure to diagnose etc. by conducting health appraisals on our children? Hypothetical: State schools conduct health appraisal on a child and the appraisal is within range of the criteria, what if the child has a heart problem or heart attack or gets diabetes etc. Can we hold the state responsible for misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose? Can parent's sue for medical neglect?
States will be TRACKING the health of your child.
I mean, really? Health assessments from schools that don't even teach/ practice personal hygiene? Beginning of each school year parent's have to contact teachers to ask that they allow children to wash their hands before lunch!
Excerpt from school memo: "The FITNESSGRAM assessment is a measure of good health as OPPOSED to athletic ability."
This is more state legislation imposed on our districts, schools, principals and teachers, but mostly imposed on individual families. Your individual body structure and health is determined by your genes, not necessarily by what you eat or how you exercise or your mental capacity, school attendance or other data.
Private school or home school is looking better every day.
